1. History
Morella dates back to prehistoric times (proven by cave paintings and Bronze Age graves found in the area), you can get more sense of that while visiting the museum of Dinosaurs of Morella, where one of the recent exibits is a skeleton of a dinosaur from 125 million years ago!
Morella was ruled by Greeks until wars with Roman Empire and Carthaginians and later on was taken by Moors in 8th century who named the city under its current name – Maurela. Throughout history Morella has witnessed several eras and plenty of wars. It was marked by Iberians, Romans, Arabs and Christians, but the city as such became known the most in medieval ages. Christians started to rule the area in 13th century and it became part of Valencia’s kingdom.
2. Morella city wall and its streets
The city stands out because of its wall that surrounds whole Morella and is more than 2 km length. The defensive wall that was built in 15th century on the remains of previous Islamic origin wall in the 11th century is around 10 – 15 metres tall and 2 m. thick. It has 16 towers, 6 gates which finishes with an impressive castle on the top of the hill.
The streets of Morella are known because of its medieval origin – they are made out of ancient stone and wood arcades. There are also quite a few ancestral houses and buildings dating even 6th century!
3.The Sexenni
The Sexenni is the festival that Morella helds every six years since 1678. It is meant to commemorate the recovery from the plague which happened in 17th century. After 20 years of deaths and horror caused by the plague, the citizens brought a statue of the Virgin Mary from the Sanctuary of Vallivana and processed it through the streets of Morella. It is said that then the plague stopped. During the festival which takes place for nine days in August traditional ancient dances are performed in Saint’s Mary honour and the statue of her is carried in procession.

5.Morella castle
This Mediterranean fortress was built in 13th century from natural stone taking advantage of the rock and was known for its good strategic point for battles and wars. Castle has an Islamic architecture with later reforms in medieval times and has three levels: entrance in the lower part, the artillery batteries – the second and finally the castle being the third. It was declared as a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931. From there you can enjoy a wonderful landscape and the view of the surroundings.

Morella has quite a few special products that can be found in this region. Apart from typical Spanish products as Cecina, sausage, honey, cheeses, wines and jams Morella is famous for black truffles (La Trufa de Morella), Croquetas Morellanas and Morella soup.
If you want something sweet, here you can find flaons (a traditional cheesecake presented in the form of a half-moon that can be filled with cottage cheese, almonds, sugar and cinnamon) and mantecadas (spongy pastry similar to a muffin) prepared in the ancient way.

1.Historia
Morella se remonta a la prehistoria (como demuestran las pinturas rupestres y las tumbas de la Edad de Bronce encontradas en la zona), lo que se puede comprobar visitando el museo de los Dinosaurios de Morella, donde una de las piezas más recientes es el esqueleto de un dinosaurio de hace 125 millones de años!
Morella fue gobernada por los griegos hasta las guerras con el Imperio Romano y los cartagineses, y más tarde fue tomada por los moros en el siglo VIII, que dieron a la ciudad su nombre actual: Maurela. A lo largo de la historia, Morella ha sido testigo de varias épocas y muchas guerras. 2. La muralla de Morella y sus calles
La ciudad destaca por su muralla que rodea toda Morella y tiene más de 2 km de longitud. La muralla defensiva que se construyó en el siglo XV sobre los restos de la anterior muralla de origen islámico del siglo XI tiene una altura de entre 10 y 15 metros y un grosor de 2 metros. Tiene 16 torres, 6 puertas que terminan con un impresionante castillo en la cima de la colina.
Las calles de Morella son conocidas por su origen medieval – están hechas de antiguas arcadas de piedra y madera. También hay bastantes casas solariegas y edificios que datan incluso del siglo VI.
3. Sexenni
El Sexenni es la fiesta que Morella celebra cada seis años desde 1678. Se trata de conmemorar la recuperación de la peste que se produjo en el siglo XVII. Después de 20 años de muertes y horror causados por la peste, los ciudadanos trajeron una estatua de la Virgen María del Santuario de Vallivana y la pasearon por las calles de Morella. Se dice que entonces la peste cesó. Durante la fiesta, que se celebra durante nueve días a finales de agosto, se interpretan danzas tradicionales antiguas en honor a Santa María y se lleva su estatua en procesión.
4. Cueva de Morella la Vella
Una de las cosas más fascinantes que puedes ver en los alrededores de Morella (situada a 6 km de Morella) – las pinturas rupestres de Morella la Vella que fueron declaradas Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en 1998. 5. Castillo
Esta fortaleza mediterránea fue construida en el siglo XIII con piedra natural aprovechando la roca y era conocida por su buen punto estratégico para las batallas y las guerras. El castillo tiene una arquitectura islámica con reformas posteriores en la época medieval y tiene tres niveles: la entrada en la parte inferior, las baterías de artillería – el segundo y finalmente el castillo siendo el tercero. Fue declarado Monumento Histórico-Artístico en 1931. Desde allí se puede disfrutar de un maravilloso paisaje y de la vista de los alrededores.
¿Qué comprar como recuerdo?
Morella tiene bastantes productos especiales que se pueden encontrar en esta región. Además de los productos típicos españoles como la cecina, el embutido, la miel, los quesos, los vinos y las mermeladas, Morella es famosa por la trufa negra (La Trufa de Morella), las croquetas morellanas y la sopa morellana.
Si quiere algo dulce, aquí puede encontrar flaons (una tarta de queso tradicional presentada en forma de media luna que se puede rellenar con requesón, almendras, azúcar y canela) y mantecadas (masa esponjosa similar a una magdalena) preparadas a la antigua usanza.
Durante mucho tiempo, Morella también fue conocida por su industria lanera y textil. Aquí se pueden encontrar tejidos artesanales, así como uno de los productos más famosos de Morella: la manta morellana de diseño único, rayada y colorida.
