Let’s dive in the beauty of Calpe

Calpe is a coastal town located in the northern part of the Costa Blanca, between Moraira and Altea. It has a millenary history of Iberian, Roman and Arabic domination. Since the seventies of the last century, the town has been developing into a modern tourist destination that attracts people from all over the world. If you are planning a stay in a holiday home in Calpe, here are some tips on the best things to do and see in the town.

The old town

To reach the old town, located in the upper part of the city, follow the main shopping street and turn left into Plaza de la Constitución. The old town of Calpe, originally a fishing village, was walled around its perimeter to protect its residents from attacks by North African pirates. Great things to see in Calpe include the church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves and the Museum of History and Archaeology. You can wander freely through the old town, exploring the picturesque cobbled streets and ornate stairways, enjoying local food at one of the many local restaurants such as Casa Mola Mola and El Posit restaurant.

Peñon de Ilfach

The Peñon de Ifach is not only an important attraction of the Valencian region, but also the very symbol of the Costa Blanca. The great limestone rock, declared a National Park in 1987, is 330 metres high and dominates the entire Badia de Calp. The rock is a corner of natural paradise that attracts climbers and sportsmen from all over the world. The seabed and cliffs are also a must for many diving and snorkelling enthusiasts.

The beaches

Calpe’s beautiful beaches are ideal for relaxing. Here you’ll find long, white sandy beaches just a stone’s throw from the town centre, as well as secluded, wild coves where you can explore the rich marine life by diving or swimming.

One of Calpe’s most famous beaches is Playa de Levante or La Fossa. It is an ideal family beach, offering a wide range of facilities, great swimming conditions and crystal clear waters, which have also earned it a Blue Flag. Other great family beaches, with the same quality of facilities, are Playa del Arenal Bol and Playa del Cantal Roig, which is a smaller beach located near the port and the Peñón de Ifach.

Historical heritage

The next stop not to be missed during a visit to Calpe is Les Salines, located to the north of the Peñon de Ifach. The salt marshes, together with Los Baños de la Reina, are today an important historical testimony to the value that the sea and salt had for the Romans who colonised the region. Today, the salt marshes are home to halophilous vegetation and a fauna of migratory birds.

The Baños de la Reina are located nearby and date back to the 4th century AD. The name of the site recalls the image of a spa and is probably linked to an ancient legend. In reality, the Baños de la Reina are large pools carved out of the rock, built for storing fish or as water gardens. The archaeological site also contains the remains of Roman houses and villas, including the ruins of the Termas de la Muntanyeta.

Unique architecture

A special feature of the Calpe area is the architectural works created along the cliffs by Ricardo Bofill, the Spanish postmodern urbanist. The Muralla Roja, in the tradition of the Qasba, and the Xanadù are ideal city constructions with courtyards, gardens and communicating terraces; the Amphitheatre, built in the 1980s, is a set of luxury flats with swimming pools and solariums, overlooking the sea.
