Alicante is a beautiful Spanish city situated on the Costa Blanca, the 200 km long coastline of the province of Alicante. It is the second biggest city in the Valencian community, after Valencia which is at a two-hour drive. Alicante is well known for its beaches and its warm weather. Its center is right next to Mount Benacantil, which summit rises up to 166 meters above sea level. On the top of the hill, you can’t miss one of the most famous symbols of Alicante: El Castillo de Santa Bárbara.
El Castillo de Santa Bárbara
This castle, built in the 9th century, has been named so because King Alfonso X took back the castle from the Arabs on December 4, 1248, the day of Santa Bárbara. It overlooks the city center and its 360° view of the surroundings is breathtaking. From the highest part of the castle, called « La Torreta », you can observe the busy city as well as the beach and the mountains. If you want to exercise a little, you can go on foot to the top of the castle. The walk starts in the cute little streets of the old town of Alicante and continues in el Parque de la Ereta. The paved ways lead you to the top. The higher up you go, the more stunning the view. However, if you don’t want to climb, you can either take the lift that will bring you directly to the castle or you can go by car. Little tip: the best moment to go up is right before sunset. The weather is cooler and more pleasant. The sun sets on the horizon behind the city. Sit back and enjoy the show. After your visit, you can go down to stroll in the district of Santa Cruz. In this medieval neighborhood of historic houses and pretty alleyways, you will find a multitude of traditional tapas bars and restaurants to enjoy a delicious dinner.
La Casa Carbonell
If you have ever walked along the port on the paseo of the Explanada de España, you have surely noticed la Casa Carbonell. This 20th century building is one of the most beautiful of Alicante. It is ideally located, in front of the port, next to Postiguet beach.
La casa Carbonell has been built on the initiative of Enrique Carbonell following a misadventure that happened to him in Alicante. Enrique Carbonell was a textile businessman from Alcoy. As his daughter had health problems, he was advised to move to the coast, where the pleasant climate would help his daughter to get better. One day, while on his way to Alicante, Carbonell had a problem and arrived in town with dirty clothes. He went to the Hotel Palace where the staff refused to let him stay in one of their rooms because of his untidy appearance, which did not match the hotel’s reputation.
Vexed, Enrique Carbonell promised himself to build a building even more luxurious and more remarkable than this hotel that had dared to refuse to accommodate him. He bought the land next door, where the old market used to be located and hired the architect J. Vidal Ramos to create this exceptional building. In 1925, la Casa Carbonell was inaugurated right next to the Hotel Palace.
Nowadays, la Casa Carbonell consists of commercial and office space on the first floor and housing on the other floors. As for the Hotel Palace, it closed its doors in 1998 after suffering a fire and subsequently falling into serious disrepair. Since then, the interior has been renovated, with only the original façade remaining. The city council of Alicante has now moved in the building.

El Castillo de Santa Bárbara y la Casa Carbonell: dos edificios emblemáticos que hay que descubrir en Alicante
Alicante es una hermosa ciudad española situada en la Costa Blanca, los 200 km de costa de la provincia de Alicante. Es la segunda ciudad más grande de la Comunidad Valenciana, después de Valencia, que se encuentra a dos horas en coche. Alicante es conocida por sus playas y su clima cálido. Su centro está justo al lado del monte Benacantil, cuya cima se eleva hasta 166 metros sobre el nivel del mar. En la cima del monte, hay uno de los símbolos más conocidos de Alicante: el castillo de Santa Bárbara.
El Castillo de Santa Bárbara
Este castillo, construido en el siglo IX, se llama así porque el rey Alfonso X el Sabio recuperó el castillo de los árabes el 4 de diciembre de 1248, día de Santa Bárbara. Domina el centro de la ciudad y su vista de 360º de los alrededores es impresionante. Desde la parte más alta del castillo, llamada “La Torreta”, se puede observar la bulliciosa ciudad, así como la playa y las montañas. Si quiere hacer un poco de ejercicio, puede ir a pie hasta el castillo. El paseo comienza en las callejuelas del casco antiguo de Alicante y continúa en el Parque de la Ereta. Los caminos empedrados te llevan a la cima. Cuanto más se sube, más impresionantes son las vistas. Sin embargo, si no quiere subir, puede tomar el ascensor que le llevará directamente al castillo o puede ir en coche. Un pequeño consejo: el mejor momento para subir es justo antes de la puesta de sol. El tiempo es más fresco y agradable. El sol se pone en el horizonte detrás de la ciudad. Siéntese y disfrute del espectáculo. Tras la visita, puede bajar a pasear por el barrio de Santa Cruz. En este barrio medieval de casas históricas y bonitas callejuelas, encontrará multitud de bares de tapas y restaurantes tradicionales para disfrutar de una deliciosa cena.
La Casa Carbonell
Si alguna vez has paseado por el puerto en el paseo de la Explanada de España, seguro que te has fijado en la Casa Carbonell. Este edificio del siglo XX es uno de los más bellos de Alicante. Su ubicación es ideal, frente al puerto, junto a la playa del Postiguet.
La casa Carbonell fue construida por iniciativa de Enrique Carbonell a raíz de una desventura que le ocurrió en Alicante. Enrique Carbonell era un empresario textil de Alcoy. Como su hija tenía problemas de salud, se le aconsejó que se trasladara a la costa, donde el clima agradable ayudaría a su hija a mejorar.
Un día, de camino a Alicante, Carbonell tuvo un problema y llegó a la ciudad con la ropa sucia. Se dirigió al Hotel Palace, donde el personal se negó a dejarle alojarse en una de sus habitaciones por su aspecto desaliñado, que no se correspondía con la reputación del hotel.
Ofendido, Enrique Carbonell se prometió a sí mismo construir un edificio aún más lujoso y notable que este hotel que se había atrevido a negarse a alojarle. Compró el terreno contiguo, donde se encontraba el antiguo mercado, y contrató al arquitecto J. Vidal Ramos para crear este excepcional edificio. En 1925, se inauguró la Casa Carbonell junto al Hotel Palace.
En la actualidad, la Casa Carbonell consta de espacios comerciales y de oficinas en la primera planta y de viviendas en las demás. En cuanto al Hotel Palace, cerró sus puertas en 1998 tras sufrir un incendio y caer en un grave deterioro. Desde entonces, el interior ha sido reformado, quedando sólo la fachada original. Actualmente, el Ayuntamiento de Alicante se ha instalado en el edificio.
