When you hear about Alicante, you might picture the sandy beaches overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, but the province is not only a coastal province, it is also one of the most mountainous in Spain. The interior of the region has its own charm and is worth a visit. Today we will take a closer look at the beautiful village of Guadalest, which is located in the mountains at only 30 minutes by car from Altea. Perched on a rock at 600 meters above sea level, this small picturesque village will take you back in time. Guadalest is made up of two neighborhoods, the Arrabal neighborhood and the castle neighborhood (the oldest, which is inside the walls). To get to the latter, you will have to go through its typical medieval entrance, which was carved out in the rock. It is a small village since only 200 people live there.
What to see in Guadalest
El Castillo de San José is located at the top of the rock. This building of Arab origin dates back to the 11th century. Two great earthquakes (in 1644 and in 1748) and the War of Succession damaged the castle. Nowadays it is possible to visit its ruins.
La Casa Orduña was named after the family of Basque origin that built it in 1644, just after the first earthquake. The Orduña were at the service of the marquises as governors of the fortress and governors of their states. The house was burned down and looted during the War of Succession (1708). Since 1998, this building full of history has become the municipal museum of Guadalest.
La plaza San Gregorio has a beautiful view on the embalse de Guadalest. There is something magical about the azure-green colour of this reservoir, located at the foot of the mountains. It is also possible to see it from the ruins of the castle.
What makes Guadalest even prettier is its surroundings. The village is only 30 minutes away by car from the coast, which can be seen in the distance just before the entrance to the old center of Guadalest, even though it is located in a very mountainous area. In March, it is still possible to see snow on the top of some of the peaks.

Did you know that Guadalest was one of the villages with the most museums per inhabitant? There are 8 of them:

Hiking
If you like hiking, you can follow the path around the reservoir which starts at Beniarda. The 10km walk is quite easy and lasts between 2h30-3h. There is little shade on the path so avoid doing this walk during the hottest hours.

Descubre el bonito pueblo de Guadalest
Cuando se oye hablar de Alicante, es posible que se imaginen las playas de arena con vistas al mar Mediterráneo, pero la provincia no es sólo una provincia costera, sino también una de las más montañosas de España. El interior de la región tiene su propio encanto y merece una visita. Hoy descubriremos el precioso pueblecito de Guadalest, que se encuentra en la montaña a sólo 30 minutos en coche de Altea. Encaramado en una roca a 600 metros sobre el nivel del mar, este pequeño y pintoresco pueblo os hará retroceder en el tiempo. Guadalest se compone de dos barrios, el del Arrabal y el del castillo (el más antiguo, que está dentro de las murallas). Para llegar a este último, tendrás que atravesar su típica entrada medieval, excavada en la roca. Es un pueblo pequeño, ya que sólo viven 200 personas.
Qué ver en Guadalest
El Castillo de San José se encuentra en la cima del peñón. Este edificio de origen árabe data del siglo XI. Dos grandes terremotos (en 1644 y en 1748) y la Guerra de Sucesión dañaron el castillo. Hoy en día es posible visitar sus ruinas.
La Casa Orduña lleva el nombre de la familia de origen vasco que lo construyó en 1644, justo después del primer terremoto. Los Orduña estuvieron al servicio de los marqueses como alcaides de la fortaleza y gobernadores de sus estados. La casa fue incendiada y saqueada durante la Guerra de Sucesión (1708). Desde 1998, este edificio lleno de historia se ha convertido en el museo municipal de Guadalest.
La plaza San Gregorio tiene una hermosa vista sobre el embalse de Guadalest. Hay algo mágico en el color verde azulado de este embalse, situado al pie de las montañas. También es posible verlo desde las ruinas del castillo.
Lo que hace que Guadalest sea aún más bonito es su entorno. El pueblo está a sólo 30 minutos en coche de la costa, que se ve a lo lejos justo antes de la entrada al casco antiguo de Guadalest, aunque se encuentra en una zona muy montañosa. En marzo, todavía es posible ver nieve en la cima de algunos picos.

Senderismo
Si te gusta el senderismo, puedes seguir el camino que rodea el embalse y que comienza en Benardia. El paseo de 10km es bastante fácil y dura entre 2h30-3h. Hay poca sombra en el camino, así que evita hacer este paseo durante las horas más calurosas.
