One of the best ways to discover the culture of a place we visit, is tasting its gastronomy or admiring its architecture and art. And one of the best ways to discover all this is by visiting the markets. In fact, markets usually awaken the 5 senses for the beauty of their products, for their smells, and because it is a place that favors interaction.
Barcelona has more than 40 markets scattered throughout the city but one of the most famous markets in Barcelona by tourists, would be La Boqueria which is located on the Rambla de Barcelona. As in any other market you can find basic products such as vegetables, fruits, meats, cheeses, fish, etc… If you are hungry, there is also the possibility to find food stalls in the market to enjoy dishes and drinks or tapas for example.
The best flea market in Barcelona, and also one of the first that existed in Europe, is called Els Encants Market. It is located in a modernist building and is the perfect place to find anything at good prices, whether it is new or second hand.
If you are strolling through the Eixample and are looking to brighten up your day and take a break, the Mercat de la Concepció, or “flower market” is the place to be as it is filled with flowers and plants for all tastes. This market is also impressive for its modernist architecture.
In the Born neighborhood you will find a market of the same name in Barcelona, which is also an architectural jewel but today has been converted into a cultural center to organize exhibitions and also houses archaeological remains.
If books are your thing, then we have already found your favorite market, it would be the Mercat de Sant Antoni, where you could get lost all day, near the Rambla. It is the only market in Barcelona that is open every day of the week and actually not only offers a range of books, as it has 3 parts: fresh food, the encantes, and the Sunday book market.
If you are on the beach and you feel like some good seafood you have the Barceloneta market which is one of the oldest in Barcelona, having been inaugurated in 1884. It is located right next to the port and is mainly famous for its fish and seafood.
The most recent market in Barcelona is the Mercat de Santa Caterina, which opened in 2005. If you want to support the producers of the region, this is the place to go.

Ruta de los mercados de Barcelona
Una de las mejores formas de descubrir la cultura de un lugar que visitamos, es probando su gastronomía o admirando su arquitectura y su arte. Y una de las mejores maneras de descubrir todo esto es visitando los mercados. De hecho los mercados suelen despertar los 5 sentidos por la belleza de sus productos, por sus olores, y porque es un lugar que favorece la interacción,…
Barcelona posee más de 40 mercados diseminados en toda la ciudad pero uno de los más famosos de Barcelona por parte de los turistas, sería La Boqueria que se encuentra en la Rambla de Barcelona. Como en cualquier otro mercado se puede encontrar productos básicos como verduras, frutas, carnes, quesos, pescados, etc… Si tienes hambre, también existe la posibilidad de encontrar puestos de comida en el mercado para disfrutar de platos y bebidas o de tapas por ejemplo.
El mejor mercado de las pulgas en Barcelona, y también uno de los primeros que existió en Europa, se llama Mercado Els Encants. Se encuentra en un edificio modernista y es el lugar perfecto para encontrar cualquier cosa a buenos precios, que sea nueva o de segunda mano.
Si estás paseando por el Eixample y estás buscando alegrarte el día y tomar una pausa, el Mercat de la Concepció, o “mercado de las flores” es el indicado ya que está repleto de flores y plantas para todos los gustos. Este mercado también es impresionante por su arquitectura modernista.
Si lo tuyo son los libros, entonces ya hemos encontrado tu mercado favorito, sería el Mercat de Sant Antoni, donde podrías perderte todo el día, cerca de la Rambla. Es el único mercado de Barcelona que está abierto todos los días de la semana y en realidad no solamente ofrece una oferta de libros, pues posee 3 partes: alimentación fresca, los encantes, y el dominical del libro.
Si estás en la playa y te apetece unos buenos productos del mar tienes el mercado de la Barceloneta que es uno de los más antiguos de Barcelona, ya que ha sido inaugurado en 1884. Se encuentra justo al lado del puerto y es principalmente famoso por su pescado y sus mariscos.
Por su parte, el mercado más reciente de Barcelona, es el Mercat de Santa Caterina ya que se inauguró en 2005. Si quiere apoyar a los productores de la región, este es el lugar al que debes acudir.
Hemos intentado destacar los mercados que nos sonaban imprescindibles de visitar si quieres hacer un tour de los mercados de Barcelona, pero la verdad es que cada uno que posee esta ciudad tiene su propio encanto.
