The city of Gerona is located in Catalonia, 99 kilometers from Barcelona and is the capital of the province of the same name (Gerona). This city founded by the Romans has a lot of history and a lot of culture, it is a quiet city with the same atmosphere that we feel in the villages of Catalonia. In addition, as in many other cities in the country, different cultures and religions have passed through this city throughout history (Muslims, Franks, Jews, Christians,…).
You can observe in Gerona the architecture of various periods such as the Arab baths of the XII-XIII centuries, the Agullana house (XIV-XVII), the old palace of Caramany (XVI-XVIII) or the modernist Teixidor house (1918). You can also stroll in the Jewish quarter called Call Jeu. In fact, in this neighborhood was created the Museum of Jewish history.
The basilica of Sant Feliu would have been the first church in the city since its construction began in the 4th century. It is known for its eight extraordinary Roman and paleochristian sarcophagi from the 2nd and 3rd centuries, embedded in the walls of the presbytery. They would have been recovered for the construction of the church, which would have been built over an ancient necropolis.
The Girona Wall walk is another essential visit, this Roman wall was built from the 1st century BC to defend the city from invaders. The total length of the wall is 2 km and offers one of the best views over the city.
At the highest point of the city is the Gothic architectural cathedral Santa Maria (11th-18th century) famous for its nave, the largest Gothic nave in the world. Here were filmed scenes of season 6 of the famous series Game of Thrones. This cathedral is quite impressive, it is perched on top of a hill and is accessed by the steps of a very large staircase.
From the cathedral you will have access to its cloister and museum, with a beautiful collection of ecclesiastical treasures, including tapestries and medieval manuscripts.
You also have to visit the most famous place of Gerona, the Iron bridge and colorful houses on the Onyar, which is one of the rivers that crosses the city, separating the old city, or Barri Vell, with the more modern city. Indeed, it is the most photographed spot in Gerona. The reflection of the colorful houses in the water of the river remains in the memory of many tourists.
If you are lucky enough to discover the city during the third week of May you will be able to observe the Temps de Flors de Girona Festival, a festival that has been celebrated since 1955 where the monuments and some courtyards of the Old Quarter are decorated with flowers.
In Gerona you can also find a considerable variety of museums such as the Cinema Museum, the Museum of History of the city, the Museum of Archaeology of Catalonia, the Museum of art,…
You can’t miss the typical food of the city, such as xuixo (a sweet), chocolate bonbons, wines and cavas, ratafia (a liqueur) and much more.

La ciudad de Girona se encuentra en Cataluña a 99 km de Barcelona y es la capital de la provincia del mismo nombre (Gerona). Esta ciudad fundada por los romanos tiene mucha historia y mucha cultura, es una ciudad tranquila con la misma atmósfera que la que sentimos en los pueblos de Cataluña. Además, como en muchas otras ciudades del país, han pasado diferentes culturas y religiones en esta ciudad a lo largo de la historia (musulmanes, francos, judios, cristianos,…).
Se puede observar en Gerona la arquitectura de varias épocas como por ejemplo los baños árabes de los siglos XII-XIII, la casa Agullana (XIV-XVII), el antiguo palacio de Caramany (XVI-XVIII) o la modernista casa Teixidor (1918). Puedes pasear también en el barrio judio llamado Call Jeu. De hecho, en este barrio fue creado el Museo de historia de los judios.
La basílica de Sant Feliu hubiera sido la primera iglesia de la ciudad ya que su construcción empezó en el siglo IV. Es conocida por sus ocho extraordinarios sarcófagos romanos y paleocristianos de los siglos II y III, incrustados en los muros del presbiterio. Se habrían recuperado para la construcción de la iglesia, que se habría levantado sobre una antigua necrópolis.
El paseo de la Muralla de Gerona es otra visita imprescindible, la muralla romana fue construida desde el siglo I antes de cristo para defender la ciudad de los invasores. El recorrido total de la muralla es de 2 km y ofrece uno de los mejores puntos de vista sobre la ciudad.
Al punto más alto de la ciudad se encuentra la Catedral arquitectónica gótica Santa María (siglos XI-XVIII) famosa por su nave, la mayor nave gótica del mundo. Aquí se rodaron escenas de la temporada 6 de la famosa serie Juego de Tronos. Esta catedral es bastante impresionante, está encaramada en la cima de una colina y se accede a ella por los peldaños de una escalera muy grande.
Desde la catedral tendrás acceso a su claustro y al museo, con una hermosa colección de tesoros eclesiásticos, incluyendo tapices y manuscritos medievales.
Tienes que visitar también el lugar más famoso de Girona que es el Puente de hierro y casas coloristas del Onyar, que es uno de los ríos que atraviesa la ciudad, separando la ciudad vieja, o Barri Vell, con la ciudad más moderna. Este es el punto más fotografiado de la ciudad. El reflejo de las coloridas casas en el agua del río permanece en la memoria de muchos turistas.
Si tienes la suerte de descubrir la ciudad durante la tercera semana del mes de Mayo podrás observar la Fiesta Temps de Flors de Gerona, una fiesta que se celebra desde el año 1955 donde los monumentos y algunos patios del Barrio Viejo están adornados de flores.
En Girona también puedes encontrar una variedad considerable de Museos como el Museo del Cinema, el Museo de Historia de la ciudad, el Museo de Arqueología de Cataluña, el Museo de arte,…
No te puedes perder la comida típica de la ciudad, como el xuixo (un dulce), los bombones de chocolate, los vinos y cavas, la ratafia (un licor) y mucho más.
