Tosa de Mar or Tossa de Mar is located on the Costa Brava north of Barcelona, in the province of Gerona. This town is famous for its beautiful coastline. In fact several movies have been filmed in this town such as Pandora and the Flying Dutchman or the Spanish film Prestamela esta noche.
Visiting this village you can take a trip back in time as there are several testimonies of human presence since the Paleolithic. There are also traces of Roman times.
The medieval wall of Vila Vella was built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries as a defense against piracy and in 1931 was declared a National Historic and Artistic Monument. At the highest point of the wall, you will find the Far de Tossa, the lighthouse, which was formerly a watchtower. If you pay attention, you will see a small passage in the walls leading to La Caleta, a small cove. This was the passage that fishermen used to take to reach their boats.
Next, you can find a parish church built in 1775, in neoclassical style, and although many objects were burned during the civil war the Altar of the Immaculate Conception remained intact and the church has been restored.
In the Vila Vella you can find the Municipal Museum, the first museum of Spanish contemporary art inaugurated in 1935, as Tosa was already attracting many artists since the late nineteenth century.
The beaches of Tossa are wonderful and reflect the spirit of the Costa Brava, bathed by crystal clear and clean waters along stretches of fine golden sand. The beaches further away from the town center, more difficult to access, are wilder and quieter. La muralla medieval de Vila Vella, fue construida entre los siglos XII y XIV como defensa contra la pirateria y en 1931 fue declarada Monumento Histórico Artístico Nacional. En el punto más alto de la muralla, encontrarás el Far de Tossa, el faro, que antiguamente era una torre de vigilancia. Si prestas atención, verás un pequeño pasaje en las murallas que conduce a La Caleta. Este era el paso que los pescadores solían tomar para llegar a sus barcos.
A continuación, se puede encontrar una iglesia parroquial construida en 1775, de estilo neoclásico, y aunque muchos objetos fueron quemados durante la guerra civil el Altar de la Inmaculada Concepción permaneció intacto y la iglesia ha sido restaurada.
En la Vila Vella podrás encontrar el Museo municipal, el primer museo de arte contemporáneo español inaugurado en 1935, pues Tosa ya estaba atrayendo a muchos artistas desde finales del siglo XIX.
Las playas de Tossa son maravillosas y reflejan el espíritu de la Costa Brava, bañadas por aguas cristalinas y limpias a lo largo de tramos de arena fina y dorada. Las playas más alejadas del centro de la ciudad, de más difícil acceso, son más salvajes y tranquilas. Además, los aficionados al buceo y al submarinismo consideran estas playas como un paraíso por su excepcional fauna y flora submarina.
Una de las especialidades gastronómicas de Tossa es su famosa “Simitomba”, un plato a base de pescado fresco con patatas, perejil, ajo, tomate, azafrán, aceite de oliva, ajo, ajo y sal. Un plato típico de pescadores.
