We all dreamed at least once in our lives to experience the adventures of a character in a novel, so here is the perfect opportunity to personally immerse yourself in the work of Cervantes. In fact, about an hour from Madrid, there is a beautiful small town, perfect for a day trip: Consuegra.
This town is in the nearby province of Toledo and it offers beautiful landscapes. Visiting the city you can learn about its natural characteristics and taste the typical products of the area as a fine wine, excellent artisan cheeses and the refined taste of saffron.
The landscapes that you can admire seem coming out of a novel and they will allow you to fully experience the adventures of the character “Don Quijote de la Mancha “.
THE MONSTERS OF THE NOVEL
In Consuegra you will find the imagine symbol of the region: the windmills placed on the hill of Calderico. In this area stand the famous twelve windmills described by Cervantes and confused by Don Quijote for monsters to fight.
Moreover, these windmills show an ancient molar stone to grind wheat and turn it into flour, but today only four are still working. Currently two of the twelve mills have been transformed into museums (one private and one public); the one that can be visited is called “Bolero” and it allows tourists to enter in a real windmill from XVI century with all its original parts!
In the book, Don Quijote thinks that these big windmills are terrible giants with rotating arms and he bravely decided to fight them like a real knight.
THE CASTLE
As a special point to observe and admire all the surrounding area of Consuegra, the castle of the town is a beautiful place to visit. Its architecture is typical of the ones described in the novel and it is a perfect attraction for all the lovers of history, peace, nature and literature.
It was built in the beginning of the XIII century whit a linear and simple style. Thanks to its thanks to its elevated position it is surely one of the best places to appreciate the fairytale landscape of the place together with the direct view on the famous windmills.

En el sendero de Don Quijote de la Mancha
Todos soñamos al menos una vez en nuestra vida experimentar las aventuras de un personaje en una novela, así que aquí está la oportunidad perfecta para sumergirse personalmente en el trabajo de Cervantes. De hecho, a una hora de Madrid, hay un pequeño pueblo precioso, perfecto para una excursión de un día: Consuegra.
Este pueblo se encuentra en la cercana provincia de Toledo y ofrece hermosos paisajes. Visitando la ciudad podrás conocer sus características naturales y degustar los productos típicos de la zona como un buen vino, excelentes quesos artesanales y el refinado sabor del azafrán.
Los paisajes que puedes admirar parecen salir de una novela y te permitirán experimentar plenamente las aventuras del personaje “Don Quijote de la Mancha”.
LOS MUNSTROS DE LA NOVELA
En Consuegra encontrarás el símbolo imaginario de la región: los molinos de viento colocados en la colina de Calderico. En esta zona se encuentran los famosos doce molinos de viento descritos por Cervantes y confundidos por Don Quijote para que los monstruos luchen.
Por otra parte, estos molinos de viento muestran una antigua piedra molar para moler trigo y convertirlo en harina, pero hoy en día sólo cuatro todavía están trabajando. Actualmente dos de los doce molinos se han transformado en museos (uno privado y otro público); el que se puede visitar se llama “Bolero” y permite a los turistas entrar en un verdadero molino de viento del siglo XVI con todas sus partes originales!
En el libro, Don Quijote piensa que estos grandes molinos de viento son terribles gigantes con brazos rotatorios y él valientemente decidió luchar contra ellos como un verdadero caballero.
EL CASTILLO
Como un punto especial para observar y admirar todos los alrededores de Consuegra, el castillo de la ciudad es un hermoso lugar para visitar. Su arquitectura es típica de las descritas en la novela y es un atractivo perfecto para todos los amantes de la historia, la paz, la naturaleza y la literatura.
Fue construido a principios del siglo XIII con un estilo lineal y sencillo. Gracias a su posición elevada es sin duda uno de los mejores lugares para apreciar el paisaje de cuento de hadas del lugar junto con la vista directa sobre los famosos molinos de viento.
