As we all know, life in Madrid can be intense and bustling. Therefore, it’s crucial to recharge your batteries once in a while. Breathe in the fresh air and take in the magnificent views country life has to offer. Besides that, listen to the serenity and calmness, and relax.
Moreover, as we don’t have an unlimited amount of vacation days, we need to use the weekends creatively to both explore and relax from the busy week at the same time.
On today’s agenda, we’re not leaving Madrid. However, we are going to explore the periferia of the capital. It’s perfect for day and weekend trips. And we promise you won’t regret it!
Before starting to organise your little get-away or hoping in your car, remember to be aware of the current regulations and restrictions if you plan on wandering around the city.
RASCAFRIA
Rascafria is truly amazing. It’s a small town in Sierra de Guadarrama. The town is situated 100 km north of Madrid in the picturesque Valle del Lozoya at an altitude of around 1.100 meters. The village is one of the most wonderful natural jewels the region of Madrid has to offer.
The village is completely isolated from anything remotely similar to a city. There are also other little villages in the valley, but the most well-known is Rascafria. The area is dominated by farms and it’s most known for outdoor activities. Those activities range from swimming in freshwater lakes, horse riding, hiking in the forests to rock climbing. In other words, the valley is a perfect escape for nature lovers. During the summer, you can also go camping in the area.
The valley has plenty to offer, but regardless of how your itinerary looks, you will be relaxed at the end of your trip.

EL ESCORIAL
The official name of this town is ‘Monasterio y Sitio de El Escorial en Madrid.’ The town is located 45 km North-West from the capital, and definitely worth a visit if you are intrigued by outstanding architecture and rich history.
The city was once the official residence of the Spanish Kings and is home to a highly esteemed monastery.
The historical buildings in El Escorial are some of the most paramount ones in Spain’s royal history. Almost every king and emperor from the last 500 years are buried in the basilica. People from all over the country (and world) travel to El Escorial to wander around the halls of the famous church and other well-known outstanding buildings. Visiting the city is truly an unforgettable experience.
Moreover, besides its rich and interesting history, it’s also a perfect destination for a little escape. The city centre is breathtaking and full of traditional bars, restaurants whose terraces are perfect for relaxing.
RIBERA DEL DUERO
Calling all wine lovers for our last stop of today’s travel guide!
Nothing more relaxing than the Spanish wine countryside. For a truly amazing little escape during the weekend, head north to one of the top wine regions of Spain, El Ribera del Duero. It’s a rather large area, so rest assured, there are enough vineyards to discover. However, the most well-known vineyards and bodega’s are located near Roa del Duero and Aranda del Duero. On another side note, if you’re also interested in non-wine activities, both towns have some impressive cathedrals and landscapes to wander around.
The best option is to rent a car, so you can have more freedom to move around.
The periferia of Madrid seems endless. But these were our top three choices for today. Rest assured part two, three, four and five will come. A continuing series of exploring Madrid’s region. Therefore, tips are always welcome.

Paseando por la periferia de Madrid
Como todos sabemos, la vida en Madrid puede ser intensa y bulliciosa. Por eso, es fundamental recargar las pilas de vez en cuando. Respira el aire fresco y disfruta de las magníficas vistas que ofrece la vida en el campo. Además, escuche la serenidad y la calma, y relájese.
Además, como no disponemos de una cantidad ilimitada de días de vacaciones, tenemos que utilizar los fines de semana de forma creativa para explorar y relajarnos de la ajetreada semana al mismo tiempo.
En la agenda de hoy, no vamos a salir de Madrid. Sin embargo, vamos a explorar la periferia de la capital. Es perfecta para excursiones de un día o de fin de semana. ¡Y te prometemos que no te arrepentirás!
Antes de empezar a organizar tu escapadita o esperar en tu coche, recuerda estar al tanto de las normas y restricciones vigentes si piensas pasear por la ciudad.
RASCAFRIA
Rascafria es realmente sorprendente. Es un pequeño pueblo de la Sierra de Guadarrama. El pueblo está situado a 100 km al norte de Madrid, en el pintoresco Valle del Lozoya, a una altitud de unos 1.100 metros. El pueblo es una de las joyas naturales más maravillosas que ofrece la región de Madrid.
El pueblo está completamente aislado de cualquier cosa remotamente parecida a una ciudad. También hay otros pueblecitos en el valle, pero el más conocido es Rascafria. La zona está dominada por las granjas y es más conocida por las actividades al aire libre. Esas actividades van desde nadar en lagos de agua dulce, montar a caballo, hacer senderismo en los bosques hasta escalar en roca. En otras palabras, el valle es una escapada perfecta para los amantes de la naturaleza. Durante el verano, también se puede acampar en la zona.
El valle tiene mucho que ofrecer, pero independientemente de cómo sea su itinerario, estará relajado al final de su viaje.

El nombre oficial de esta localidad es “Monasterio y Sitio de El Escorial en Madrid”. La ciudad está situada a 45 km al noroeste de la capital, y sin duda merece una visita si te intriga la arquitectura excepcional y la rica historia.
La ciudad fue en su día la residencia oficial de los Reyes de España y alberga un monasterio de gran prestigio.
Los edificios históricos de El Escorial son algunos de los más importantes de la historia real de España. Casi todos los reyes y emperadores de los últimos 500 años están enterrados en la basílica. Personas de todo el país (y del mundo) viajan a El Escorial para pasear por las salas de la famosa iglesia y otros edificios destacados. Visitar la ciudad es una experiencia realmente inolvidable.
Además de su rica e interesante historia, es un destino perfecto para una pequeña escapada. El centro de la ciudad es impresionante y está lleno de bares y restaurantes tradicionales cuyas terrazas son perfectas para relajarse.
RIBERA DEL DUERO

No hay nada más relajante que el campo del vino español. Para una pequeña escapada realmente increíble durante el fin de semana, dirígete al norte, a una de las principales regiones vinícolas de España, El Ribera del Duero. Es una zona bastante extensa, así que tenga por seguro que hay bastantes viñedos que descubrir. Sin embargo, los viñedos y bodegas más conocidos se encuentran cerca de Roa del Duero y Aranda del Duero. Por otro lado, si también le interesan las actividades no relacionadas con el vino, ambas ciudades cuentan con impresionantes catedrales y paisajes por los que pasear.
La mejor opción es alquilar un coche, para tener más libertad de movimientos.
